AB de Villiers Hints A Cricket Comeback: Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has dropped a massive hint over his potential comeback to professional cricket. While he confirmed that he wouldn’t return to IPL or SA20 cricket, he reckons there are other tournaments where he’s good enough to play even at the age of 40.
One of the greatest batsmen of all time, AB de Villiers made his international debut in 2004 and played his last game for South Africa in 2018. At the time of his international retirement, de Villiers cited mental fatigue as the reason for moving away from international cricket at the age of 34.
“I am tired,” he had said in his retirement announcement in 2018, adding that he “is running out of gas and feeling that it is the right time to move on. Everything comes to an end.”
He continued to play franchise cricket in T20 leagues around the world until 2021, when he retired from all forms of the game. His last professional tournament was the IPL 2021, where his side, RCB, reached the playoffs but couldn’t reach the final. ABD failed to win a single ICC title and IPL trophy in his glittering career that saw him become an all-time legend.
AB de Villiers Hints A Cricket Comeback
Recently, speaking in an interview on the Running Between The Wickets show, the 40-year-old former Protea captain revealed that his kids are nudging him to play again, and this could ignite a fire in him to return to the game.
AB de Villiers said, “I might still play cricket one day. No confirmation whatsoever, but I’m starting to feel it. My kids are putting me under a bit of pressure, and I feel like I could go to the nets with them. If I enjoy it, maybe I’ll walk out and go and play a little bit of casual cricket somewhere again and not professional IPL stuff or SA tours.”
De Villiers had previously revealed that his left eye has blurry vision, which forced him to retire before the expected time.
The right-hander further said, “Who knows? But we’ll see. I’m going to try it again and see if this eye is still working. It’s a bit blurry, but this (the right one) is the dominant one, and it’s working fine. So, I’m doing it for my kids and see if I can go out there and enjoy cricket again.”
“Nothing serious, though. We’re not talking about RCB and big stuff. Yes, I don’t want to feel that pressure again. That’s the thing. So, wherever I go, I’ll have a bit of fun.”
