India ODI squad vs England: The Indian team management is looking to make the most out of Varun Chakravarthy’s sensational T20 form and are punting on it as they have reportedly added him to the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, with an eye on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as well.
India will host England in a three-ODI series, starting on February 6. The ODIs will be played in Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad.
Chakravarthy was initially not included in the squad for the ODIs against England and has never been part of the ODI setup. But his outstanding T20I form became too good to be ignored by the selectors and the team management, and hence, as per a report in ESPNcricinfo, he’s been added to the squad for the ODI series against Jos Buttler’s team.
Chakravarthy bagged the Man of the Series award for India’s 4-1 T20I series win against England as he took 14 wickets at an average of 9.86 with an economy of 7.66. He then traveled with the ODI squad member to Nagpur and trained on Tuesday ahead of the first ODI on Thursday.
Since his return to India’s T20I team last year, Chakravarthy has played 12 T20Is. In it, he’s claimed 31 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, at an average of 11.25, a strike rate of just 8.9, and an economy of 7.58.
Chakravarthy was the second-highest wicket-taker in last season’s Vijay Hazare Trophy, snaring 18 wickets in six matches at an average of 12.16 and a strike rate of 16.72.
His reported inclusion adds another spin option to India’s squad that already includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar.
There is a chance Varun Chakravarthy might be picked for Champions Trophy: R Ashwin
Recently, the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Ravichandran Ashwin have suggested that India include Chakravarthy in their Champions Trophy squad.
Ashwin said on his YouTube channel,
“We are all talking about whether he should have been there (Champions Trophy squad). I am thinking there is a chance he might be there. I have a feeling he might make it. There is a chance because all teams have named only a provisional squad. So, he might get picked.”
While Chakravarthy is not part of the provisional Champions Trophy squad, changes to it can be made until February 11, that is, before India’s third ODI vs England.
