Who Is Sitanshu Kotak: Reports have emerged in recent hours that former domestic cricketer Sitanshu Kotak is expected to be appointed as the batting coach of the Indian Cricket Team under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach of Team India. With him, he brought his coaching staff from his previous job as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, that being Abhishek Nayar, Morne Morkel, Ryan Ten Doeschate, and T Dilip. This unit won the IPL title in 2024.
Early in his reign as the head coach, ‘Gauti’ was averse to the idea of a specialist batting coach. But now, after the team was disappointed with their batting in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, it seems that a new batting coach would be brought into the team.
Who Is Sitanshu Kotak? The New India Batting Coach
The frontrunner for this job is Sitanshu Kotak. But who is this person who could be India’s next batting coach? Sitanshu Hargovindbhai Kotak was born on October 19, 1972, in Rajkot, Gujarat, making him 52 years old at the time of writing. He was a left-handed batter for Saurashtra in domestic cricket.
Making his debut in 1992, Kotak had a 21-year-long career in domestic cricket. He played 130 first-class matches, scoring 8061 runs with an average of 41.76. He also scored 3083 runs in 89 List A matches with an average of 42.23. He also has 70 wickets in first-class cricket under his name.
After retiring from competition after the 2013 Ranji Trophy season, Kotak started making his name as a coach in the domestic circuits, eventually becoming the head coach of the Saurashtra Ranji team, winning the title in the 2019-20 season.
When Rahul Dravid became the head of the National Cricket Academy before becoming the India coach, Sitanshu Kotak was his successor in the role of the head coach of the India A-Team. Kotak would then go on to become a batting coach at the NCA. Besides that, he has also had experience coaching in the IPL, being an assistant coach of the defunct Gujarat Lions in 2017 under Brad Hodge.
After a 3-0 loss at home to New Zealand and a 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it is now very likely that Sitanshu Kotak will be India’s new batting coach under Gautam Gambhir as the Indian Cricket team shifts its focus to the Champions Trophy 2025, which will take place in February.
