Drama in Delhi

The contest was marked by a unique and controversial incident. Angelo Mathews was dismissed due to a rare “timed out” incident, marking the first instance of this dismissal in international cricket. The incident occurred when Mathews’ faulty helmet strap delayed the start of the next batter. As per the BAN vs SL ICC CWC 2023 Match 38 Report, Shakib Al Hasan appealed, leading to Mathews being ruled out, further intensifying the rivalry.

On a batting-friendly pitch, Bangladesh opted to field first, limiting Sri Lanka to a below-par total of 279. Tanzim Hasan, the young paceman, conceded 80 runs in his ten overs, primarily due to Charith Asalanka’s aggressive batting. However, as per the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka World Cup 2023 Results, he managed to take three wickets, including crucial dismissals of Pathum Nissanka and Asalanka himself.

The rest of the Bangladeshi bowlers contained Sri Lanka, who faced challenges in maintaining a high run rate. As per the BAN vs SL ICC CWC 2023 Match 38 Report, Despite a spirited partnership between Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka couldn’t score freely.

In reply, Bangladesh’s chase was anchored by a 169-run third-wicket partnership between Shakib and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Sri Lanka struggled with the evening dew, and their bowlers lost control. Although Sri Lanka took wickets when the partnership was broken, Bangladesh’s deep batting lineup allowed them to secure a hard-fought victory.

As per the BAN vs SL ICC CWC 2023 Match 38 Report, The match, despite the controversy, highlighted the strong all-round performance from Bangladesh and the individual brilliance of Shakib.

Sri Lanka’s innings began with Kusal Perera’s early exit, caught by Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps. A 61-run partnership between Nissanka and Kusal Mendis temporarily steadied Sri Lanka. Nissanka played aggressively, but Mendis struggled for form and took 14 balls to open his account. Although he hit two boundaries, he eventually fell while trying to loft a delivery.

Nissanka followed shortly after, losing his wicket to Tanzim. As per the BAN vs SL ICC CWC 2023 Match 38 Report, Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama then formed a solid partnership. Their left-right combination frustrated the Bangladeshi bowlers, and they scored runs without taking many risks.

Samarawickrama’s dismissal, an aerial flick to deep square leg, interrupted their partnership. This wicket was followed by the “timed out” incident, which galvanized Sri Lanka but was too late to change the course of the game.

Sri Lanka had struggled to form significant partnerships throughout the tournament. Still, this game saw two quality partnerships, one between Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva and another between Asalanka and Maheesh Theekshana. Asalanka played a remarkable innings with calculated risks and smart strike rotation. Despite being the bowler when Shakib was dropped on seven, Mathews eventually dismissed Shakib.

Shakib had the last word, contributing 75 more runs to his team’s total. Matthews removed Shanto, providing Sri Lanka with a glimmer of hope. Theekshana took two wickets, and Dilshan Madushanka added another, but Bangladesh sealed the game with some aggressive hitting in the end.
