Ben Stokes talks about his return from Injury: England’s star allrounder, Ben Stokes, has outlined his intentions to overcome his persistent left-knee injury and make a comeback as a “genuine allrounder” next summer, focusing on his role as a batter for now. Stokes, who played as a specialist batter in the last three Tests of this summer’s Ashes series, will continue in the same capacity when he returns to England’s ODI side.

As Ben Stokes talks about his return from injury, he has ruled out the possibility of bowling during the upcoming World Cup. However, he has a comprehensive plan in place to manage his injury. While he did not delve into the details, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of undergoing surgery between the World Cup and England’s Test tour to India in early 2024.

“It’s been a good chance to rest up and get into a good position for these one-dayers and the World Cup afterward,” Stokes said. “I’ve had some good conversations with specialists in different fields around rehab and a plan going forward after the World Cup. There will be the potential of something happening after the World Cup.”

As Ben Stokes talks about his return from injury, despite his knee troubles, Stokes is eager to be part of England’s World Cup campaign and is committed to defending the title they won in 2019. After a break following the Ashes series, during which he took time off and missed The Hundred, Stokes resumed discussions with team management about his return to the ODI side.

Stokes will feature in England’s upcoming four ODIs against New Zealand before heading to India for the World Cup. He has consulted medical specialists to devise a long-term plan for his knee, keeping in mind his goal to return as a genuine allrounder. Ben Stokes said,

“I want to be playing next summer as a genuine allrounder; this winter is all about playing this World Cup, then getting this knee sorted.”

While the specifics of his plan remain undisclosed, it appears unlikely that Stokes will play a significant role as a bowler during England’s five-Test series in India. Regarding his INR 16.25 crore (£1.6 million) contract with Chennai Super Kings for the IPL, Stokes mentioned that IPL 2024 is too distant to be of concern at present.

Stokes had retired from ODIs last year due to a grueling schedule, but the lure of winning back-to-back 50-over World Cups proved irresistible. He stated,

“The words ‘World Cup’ are pretty inspiring.” Stokes feels confident about England’s prospects in the tournament, saying, “Everyone knows we’re a very good team. We’ve got a very good depth of personnel to choose from, and our record since the World Cup has been very good.”

Despite a 14-month absence from 50-over cricket, Stokes believes he will adapt quickly, and not having the responsibility of captaincy could be refreshing. As he gears up for his ODI return, he remains focused on making a meaningful contribution to England’s World Cup campaign.
