MS Dhoni On How IPL Helped Him As Captain: MS Dhoni, in a recent interview, opened up about how the IPL helped him talk to and understand foreign players, as it brought players from several countries together into one locker room.
The 2024 season of the IPL is just weeks away, THe opening match will pit defending champions Chennai Super Kings against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Having kicked off in 2008, IPL was somewhat of a novel idea in the world of cricket. A game based around national and local teams was changed into one where locker rooms consisted of players from all over the world.
MS Dhoni On How IPL Helped Him As Captain
Dhoni, who is the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five titles to his name, recently opened up about how unique an experience was captaining an IPL locker room in an interview with Star Sports, he said –

“The Chennai team that played in 2008 was a well-balanced team and had a lot of all-rounders. The team had a vast pool of experienced players such as Matthew Hayden, Mike Hussey, Muttiah Muralitharan, Makhaya Ntini, and Jacob Oram. To get them all together in one dressing room, to get to know each other was a challenge.”
He continued –
“I always believed that when you’re leading a team, it is important to make sure you understand each other. Once you know the individual, you know his strengths, his weaknesses, it becomes easier as a team to move in the right direction.”
Dhoni then went on to credit IPL for his ability to talk to and bond with foreign players.
“IPL gave me an opportunity to understand a lot of foreign players. I wasn’t somebody who talked a lot to the opposition players but IPL provided an opportunity to know about other players, to know what they think about cricket, to know their culture. All of that made IPL very interesting,” said Dhoni.
