World Fencing Championships 2023 Schedule: The upcoming 2023 World Fencing Championships promise thrilling battles, and some standout fencers are expected to make their mark in the men’s and women’s competitions. Here’s a closer look at the athletes to watch in the different fencing disciplines:

Épée Events 

Will the French Dominance be Countered?

The French épée team is one of the best in the world. They are top-ranked as well as the defending champions. For them, the reigning individual champions Romain Cannone and Alexandre Bardenet, who are ranked fourth and fifth respectively, will be important assets for the Championship.

Italy, Japan, and Hungary: All will Test their Tusks

Italy are ranked second in the team event. They will be the biggest threat to France in the épée events. World no. 2 and 7, Davide di Veroli and Federico Vismara, will be in their toolbox in the individual competition.

Japan has a lethal weapon in its arsenal in the name of Kano Koki. Koki is the world’s number 1 épée fencer, and this will increase the intensity of the competition.

Hungary got their fair share of talents as well like Gergely Siklosi, who is ranked third globally.

Foil Fencing

USA Dominance in the Foil Fencing

USA dominate in foil fencing with three fencers ranked in the world’s top 10: Alexander Massialas (1), Ferek Meinhardt (3), and Nick Itkin (8). Miles Chamley-Watson who is at the 16th rank cannot be counted out as well.

The defending team champions Italy will be the biggest challenge for the USA. Their lineup includes Alessio Foconi (4), Tommaso Marini (6), Daniele Garozzo (10), and Filippo Macchi (11).

In the individual event, France‘s Enzo Lefort aims for a three-peat, a feat not seen since 1999.

Sabre Discipline: Republic of Korea and Hungarian Contenders

Sabre

Currently, The Republic of Korea is the top-ranked team in Sabre, reigning gold medallist in the team event.

Hungary comes as a strong opponent with Áron Szilágyi (world no. 2 and defending individual champion) and Andras Szatmari (world no. 5) leading the team.

Georgia is another force with Sandro Bazadze as the top-ranked sabre fencer globally.

Top Teams and Fencers to Watch- Women

The Women’s teams in the  2023 World Fencing Championships are also exceptionally good with amazing talents on showcase.

Épée Events

The Republic of Korea dominate women’s épée events with world no. 2 Song Se-ra on their side. She is the defending world champion in the individual épée event.

Kenya comes on the strength of Alexandra Ndolo, who is ranked sixth globally. She will make her World Championships debut for Kenya, adding an exciting dimension to the competition.

French fencers will also be strong in the competition to disrupt the South Korean title hopes.

Foil Fencing

France: Ysaora Thibus aims for a second straight title in the individual foil event for France and is the number one player they got

Italy, with a passionate home crowd, may have the edge, boasting a top-ranked team and individual fencers like Alessio Foconi (4), Tommaso Marini (6), and Daniele Garozzo (10).

Japan has the world No. 3 Azuma Sera and the USA has the Olympic champion Lee Kiefer on their side.

Sabre 

Japan and France stand out in Sabre.

Japan’s Emura Misaki is the defending champion as well as the top-ranked individual in sabre 

Greece‘s Theodora Gkountoura and Despina Georgiadou, along with France’s Sara Balzer and Manon Apithy-Brunet, are expected to provide tight competition.

The Republic of Korea ranked second as a team, are reigning champions in the sabre event.

World Fencing Championships 2023 Schedule

World Fencing Championships 2023 Schedule: The championship takes place between July 22 and July 30, with various events each day.

The Events include men’s sabre, women’s épée, men’s épée, women’s foil, men’s foil, women’s sabre, and team events.

The closing ceremony will take place on July 30.

Viewers can catch the live action via the Olympic Channel on Olympics.com (subject to territorial restrictions). Livestreams of competition semi-finals and finals will be available from July 25 onward.
