Mohammed Shami Undergoes Surgery: Senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been officially ruled out of the IPL 2024 season after he underwent surgery on his ankle in London. The 33-year-old took to social media to confirm a successful surgery on his right Achilles tendon. The IPL 2023 will start on March 22 and is expected to conclude on May 26.
This year, the Gujarat Titans, the runner-up of last season, will miss the services of Mohammed Shami, who was the leading wicket-taker in both the IPL 2023 and the World Cup 2023.
Shami played the World Cup with pain in his right ankle, taking painkillers and pain injections. Despite this and being benched for India’s first four games, he ended up with the most wickets, including a historic 7-wicket haul in the semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede. He dismissed David Warner in the final, but India couldn’t build on it much and lost the final in Ahmedabad.
He hasn’t played any cricket since, missing, among important series, the Test series in South Africa, where India drew 1-1, and the ongoing Test series at home against England. He had earlier been recovering at the BCCI’s NCA facility in Bangalore. He was, interestingly, named in the squad for the South Africa series, but was then ruled out.

Mohammed Shami posted a few pictures of himself lying on his hospital bed in London. He captioned it, “Just had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet. #AchillesRecovery #HeelSurgery #RoadToRecovery”
Last month, he had expressed optimism that he could make a comeback in the middle of the Test series against England. But the injury had aggravated so much while playing in the World Cup that he now needed surgery for it.
This means that he is also all but ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June in the West Indies and the USA. In Shami’s absence, India played Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep in Test matches.
