Stokes’ remarkable partnership of 129 runs with Chris Woakes proved crucial in lifting England from a precarious situation of 192 for 6 to a formidable total of 339 for 9 in Pune. The win, with 12.4 overs to spare, marked England’s second victory of the tournament but came too late to salvage their chances of reaching the semi-finals. However, it significantly improved their net run rate, pulling them off the bottom of the table and ahead of Bangladesh into seventh place.

England vs Netherlands Highlights World Cup 2023 Match 40

Despite losing Jonny Bairstow early, England started well, reaching 70 for 1 after 10 overs. Dawid Malan showcased his form with a quick half-century, but his run-out and the subsequent fall of wickets created a familiar pattern in England’s struggles. Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, and Moeen Ali all fell cheaply, leaving England in a precarious position.

Stokes, however, showcased his class with a brilliant century, hitting boundaries and sixes with ease. His partnership with Woakes turned the game in England’s favor, and they accelerated in the final overs. Stokes reached his century with a reverse sweep, and Woakes contributed with a quick fifty.

The Netherlands faced a daunting target of 340 runs but suffered early blows, losing Max O’Dowd and Colin Ackermann quickly. Their top-order collapse continued, and at the end of the 10-over powerplay, they were struggling at 23 for 3. Wes Barresi’s slow innings added to their woes, and despite Teja Nidamanuru’s resistance, they lost wickets at regular intervals.

England’s fielding wasn’t flawless, with missed chances and a burned review, but they managed to restrict Netherlands. Barresi was run out for 37, and Sybrand Engelbrecht’s wicket marked another setback. Despite a brief partnership between Nidamanuru and Scott Edwards, the Netherlands lost their last five wickets for just 16 runs, sealing England’s victory by a significant margin.
